This season the Under 10 boys’ football league of Herefordshire will have a new team Ross Royals. It's not unusual to see the occasional girl playing in a boys’ team at this age but what will make this team very different is they are all girls. Ross will be running 2 all boys teams in this age with Juniors run by Dan Morris and Colts by Ozzie Ravenhill, this new team will be a 3rd team for the club in this age group. The benefits of girls playing boys football is many as it really sharpens their skills as the boys league is more competitive, faster and more physical than the girls league, mistakes are more often punished and the boys are always keen to get one over the girls. The Ross Royals team is made up of girls from Ross, Gorsley, Eastnor, Ledbury, Tewksbury and Hereford. Many of the girls in the squad play for Ross or Lads Club and are keen rivals in Sundays girls football but have been brought together to form this new Saturday side. Recently the girls travelled to the Sue Parry Tournament in Hereford to compete in the boys tournament. Many of the girls had not played against boys teams before on a regular basis and many of the girls were meeting for the first time. The Royals came out of the tournament with great credit with only one defeat to an experienced first team from Pegasus 2-1. The rest of their group results saw them qualify for a 3rd place play off with Lads Club which the girls won with a thrilling 3-2 penalty shootout. Many comments were made by opposing teams about the girls’ style of play and their robustness in their tackling, many times the boys came off second best. The Gallery 54 player of the tournament was Izzy.
